BENEATH THE TABLE, part 2

Another evening.

And another meeting.

The two elflings were hiding beneath the table. With a bag of mice. And a bag of snakes.

Elrond spoke of darkness approaching them. At least he did until a handful of terrified little mice began to scurry out from beneath one of the tables. It took half an hour to rid the room of vermin and to begin again.

Shortly after that, many little snakes began to slither hither and yon. Even small snakes are scary to some and both elves and men began to cry out in alarm and run from the room until only Elrond and two small hidden elflings remained.

Elrond spoke to the unseen children. “I thank you for rescuing me this time but I shall require your attendance at all of my meetings from now on if this ever happens again.”

From that evening forward, the sons of Elrond were content to study some of Master Erestor’s history after dinner. Sometimes they did their mathematics. They’d even play with Arwen if pressed into it. They drank imaginary tea and danced with her dolls now and then.

Anything, it seemed, was better than a meeting in the Hall of Fire.

BENEATH THE TABLE, part 1

Elladan and Elrohir hid beneath the table in the Hall of Fire, trying to be silent as well as invisible. They wanted to see what exactly went on when ‘important guests’ came to visit their father, who always sent them to their room directly after dinner was done.

Soon the room filled with both elves and men, who talked of things that sounded even more boring than Master Erestor’s histories.

“I’m glad Papa sends us to bed,” Elladan whispered to Elrohir. “It’s a wonder that they all don’t die of boredom.”

“We can fix that,” Elrohir whispered with a wink…

AT LAST

Oropher wandered the shores of Aman alone much of the time. He thought about his son, his only son. How had Thranduil fared since he died all those many years ago? He stopped the tall ships when they came into port but none seemed to know Thranduil’s fate.

Elrond and Galadriel arrived and a few years later, his grandson, Legolas, arrived with a dwarf, of all things! But his son was still conspicuously absent.

Then one day he saw a ship on the horizon, the first one in a long, long time. He made his way to the dock and waited. Celeborn disembarked with another elf, but the other elf was too far to the side and Oropher couldn’t see his face.

Then he heard him speak. “The first thing I shall do is find my father. I have missed him these many long years.”

Thranduil cried tears of joy.

He would always be haunted by the memories of her. There was no place in all of Eru’s creation that he would not hear her voice or see her face. She had been his sun and his moon for all these many years. Though she was far away, he’d known when her voice stopped, when her light went out. There would never, in the rest of time, be a joy that was not tempered by her absence, by her loss.

He tossed a pebble in the sea as he gazed toward the east, toward Arda.

“Goodbye, my child. Rest well.”

“And I’m going back for some grape jelly and strawberry preserves,” Pip put in as he laid his burden on the table.

“What is all this?” Frodo asked them.

“Since we are all so happy to be back in the Shire, Rosie Cotton thought a meal to celebrate our thankfulness might be good idea,” Merry told him.

“And we all agreed,” Pippin said as Sam arrived with the meats and pickles.

“So here we are,” Sam said as he patted Frodo on the shoulder.

Frodo smiled, something rare for him since his return. “I am glad you are all my friends.”

Legolas nodded, his attention on the spitted rabbit.

“Why did ye never say anything?”

Legolas looked at him. “And what was I to say? Your father never liked elves and telling you that I knew him wouldn’t change that.”

“No, I guess not. He said when I mentioned you that he didn’t like elves but if I associated with one, you were more tolerable than most.”

Legolas sat back, and threw one arm around Gimli, leaned down impulsively and kissed his cheek.

“Wonder what he’d say if he could see us now?”

THE RUNAWAY

Legolas didn’t want to run away but he decided that Papa didn’t want him around so he was going to find a new home with someone who wanted him. Maybe he’d live with some dwarves! That would teach Papa a lesson.

He packed up his important things in a small pack, his smooth rocks, his box of lucky coins from some travelers that papa had let pass through and his stuffed bunny, Hops. He put in one pair of pants and one shirt. That should be enough.

He left before his father got up, making sure no one saw him go and he headed toward the Misty Mountains. Maybe there’d be dwarves there. He wondered if they ate elflings…

After he walked for hours and hours, which was really maybe half an hour in actual time, he got so tired that he had to sit down and rest. Pretty soon he was looking up into the scariest face he’d ever seen.

“Don’t eat me!” he yelped as the dwarf lifted him to his feet.

“I haven’t eaten any elflings in a long time. They tend to be rather chewy. Who might you be?”

“I am Legolas of – I’m just Legolas.”

“Might you have a father?”

“He don’t need me about. He says I’m underfoot.”

“I don’t see a foot on top of you. You look like a perfectly good elfling to me.”

“I can be your son then. I’d make a good dwarf. My house is in a cave too.”

“I have a son already and he is a fine son.”

“He’s not underfoot?”

The dwarf laughed. “Sometimes he is but I like him anyway, just as I suspect your father likes you.”

“It’s getting late, isn’t it? I’m hungry.”

The dwarf smiled. It was not yet noon but obviously the boy had run off without breakfast. “I’ll give you an apple that my son picked for me and then we’ll get you back to your father before you miss any more meals. I’m sure if you have a mother, she will not think you underfoot. Mothers do not think that way.”

Legolas had forgotten that he hadn’t told his mother. She might cry if he didn’t go back!

He told the dwarf where he lived and took his hand as they both walked back toward his home in the Green Wood. When they came close enough for little Legolas to find his way, the dwarf turned to him.

“Go on with you then and maybe they won’t even notice.”

Legolas nodded and walked away. He turned back.

“You didn’t tell me your name.”

“I am Gloin. Maybe we shall meet again someday.”

Little Legolas bowed to him and ran home. Gloin smiled. That one reminded him of his own son, Gimli. Best get home. He promised to take Gimli hunting.

GRANDFATHER’S BOOK

Arwen opened the trunk and lifted the heavy book out. She had not opened it since it was given to her upon her marriage so many years ago. She knew what it was without opening it. Everyone knew about the book, her grandfather’s book, Lord Celeborn’s Book. It had been passed along to her.

She sat down on the edge of the bed and unwrapped it. She opened it. It was filled with drawings of elves she knew and some that she didn’t know in various lovemaking scenes. The artwork was exquisite, perfect in every detail. She saw her brothers, Erestor, Glorfindel and even her father in the pages.

When she turned to the last page, she knew that there would be a drawing of Elessar and herself. She smiled when she came to it – she and her husband were in their huge clawfoot tub and she was gazing down at him with such a look of love. She remembered that very night, as a matter of fact. It was their first night after all the wedding guests had gone and they were finally alone at last. If she had to choose a perfect moment in all their years together, she’d choose that one.

She thumbed back through the pages, seeing the love in all those faces as they showed that love to one another. A single tear fell down onto the drawing of her and her husband as she came once again to their drawing. She closed the book with a gentle smile.

It was time to pass the book along. Her son would marry soon and when he did, he and his bride would have their own page. She put the book back in its wrapping and replaced it in her trunk.

All these many years she’d thought it was about sex. Everyone thought that. But it never had been. It had always been simply a book of love.

THE GRANDMOTHER

The old woman sat in her rocker by the fire. She was knitting a cap for one of her great- grandchildren, one that hadn’t been born yet. Funny that no matter how many children and grandchildren and now great-grandchildren she had, each one was special and unique and she loved them individually. Love really did seem to multiply but the number of people you loved.

She thought back many years and smiled to herself. Her children knew her as Ma and as the wife of a Prince. But they didn’t know everything about her. Not at all.

She remembered that awful day, that horrible day on Pelennor Fields. The day she lost her uncle. The day she almost lost her life. The day she killed the Witch King and turned the tide of the battle. She’d never told her children anything of those days and had forbade their father from ever telling them.

It seemed silly now that she had wanted to marry Aragorn. But she had. She had loved him in her own way and would have grieved when he married Arwen but for Faramir. She’d learned to love him in the days after the battle, in the days in the infirmary. How she loved him. She missed him so much these days, his smile, his quiet authority, his goodness. Sometimes a person had no real idea what they had until it was gone from them.

But she knew now she’d not have to wait long. She’d not live to see this great-grandchild born in the summer. She didn’t want to leave her children but it was time. Time to join Faramir once again.

Perhaps she could teach him to ride like the wind like the Rohirrim did. It was something she’d always wanted to do but life had gotten in the way and they’d never just gone out riding.

Riding… she could almost feel her horse beneath her…

SOUP’S ON

Legolas Greenleaf sat by the fire, waiting for Gimli to return from hunting. He wondered what the dwarf would bring back for their dinner. He’d shot a coney or caught a few fish the last few nights so tonight, Gimli decided that it was his turn to kill dinner.

Legolas knew that Gimli was great with large game, like bear or the wild beef that could be found out near Rohan but Legolas had never thought him stealthy enough for the small, quick animals of the forest. He’d just smiled when Gimli had said he was going hunting and not said a word.

He heard someone approaching and by the gait, it sounded like the dwarf. He poked the fire and waited.

Gimli was carrying something but it looked more like a bag than an animal. As he got closer, Legolas saw that it was a bag.

He waited for Gimli to say something.

“What? You’ve never seen a sack of potatoes before?”

Legolas raised an eyebrow.

“I said I was going to hunt dinner. I did not say what.”

Legolas laughed out loud and clapped him on the back. “No, you didn’t say what. Let’s see them. I think I have some spices still to make us a nice hot soup.”

“Just what I wanted too!”

So they made soup and ate it beside their fire. It was filling and tasted fine but not as good as roasted rabbit or some nice, large fowl would have. After dinner, Legolas tidied up their few bowls and spoons.

“I’m a better guard than you are so tomorrow, I’ll guard the camp and you can go back to finding dinner.”

“That would be fine,” Legolas agreed and not another word was said about it, though Legolas was never able to eat potato soup again without a smile coming to his face.

“What is the matter?” Erestor asked her as he sat in the other chair.

“Brothers are dumb!”

Erestor tried not to smile. “Yours appear to be. What have they done now?”

“They said I couldn’t be a soldier cuz I’m just a girl.”

“They did? Did you want to be a soldier?”

“I wanted to play soldier with them. They said girls are s’posed to learn to sew and cook.”

“Did you ask when they’d ever seen your mother or your nana sewing and cooking?”

She looked up and smiled. “Restor, you’re right. Nana is like a queen and everyone in Lorien does as she says, even Papa Celeborn. And Mama, well, Mama helps Father in the apothecary and she helps him when he treats sick people. She makes sure that everyone in all of Imladris does their work, mostly Dan and Ro, who she says are ‘lazy, lazy boys’ and Father, who would forget his head if it wasn’t ‘tached to him.”

“See there? You can be anything you want to be.”

Arwen smiled, her tiny face already showing what a beauty she would someday be. “I want to grow up to be like Mama and Nana, a queen who knows more than her silly husband.”

Erestor lifted her down from her father’s chair and handed her one of the pretty red apples that Elrond kept in a bowl on the desk. “I’m sure you’ll do just that, little one. Run along and tell your brothers that I said you can be anything you want and they’d better behave and let you play too.”

Erestor watched her and wondered what the future really had in store for her.
Whatever it was, she was sure to be up to the task; that much he knew.

RIDERS OF THE WHITE CITY

Faramir was always thrilled when Father allowed Boromir some time away from his military studies and training. Those times were seldom and he meant to make every moment count. Who didn’t want to spend time with his older brother?

“What shall we play?” Boromir asked. He was several years older than Faramir but not too old yet for boyhood fun and games. He always asked Faramir what he wanted to do though this time the answer he got was not quite what he expected but his young brother was always full of surprises.

“Maybe we could be horse soldiers like the Rohirrim?”

“Maybe we could call ourselves Riders of the White City.” Boromir’s pride in his home was evident in his voice.

They ran to the stables and saddled their horses. The guard opened the gate as both of the sons of the Steward raced through. Before he closed the gates back, he nodded to the third rider who would watch after them from afar, making sure they were safe.

“This is so much fun! We should ride all the way to Rohan and show them what fine horsemen we are!” Faramir shouted as Boromir let him race into the front.

“Maybe we should make a camp a little closer to home. Father might have need of us.”

The two boys unloaded their gear, foraged for dry firewood and put up a small tent. Boromir made fishing poles from young saplings along the river bank, using string and hooks he brought from home to complete them. Faramir was put to the task of hunting worms for bait. A few hours later, they ate their own fish, cooked on a rock over the fire. Not even a king’s kitchen had such grand food as they did.

“I wish Father would let me train like you do,” Faramir said rather wistfully.

“He will soon enough, brother. Enjoy these days. Sometimes I wish I could do this all the time instead of so much training.”

They lay down by the fire on their blankets and told stories and jokes late into the night. Faramir fell asleep in the middle of a story. Boromir put him in the tent and covered him with a blanket. Then he slept himself.

*

In later years, both brothers would remember this night as one of their favorite memories. It would be the story that Faramir told his own children about his boyhood in Gondor and about their uncle, the finest brother anyone ever had.

“In sorrow we must go, but not in despair. Behold! we are not bound for ever to the circles of the world, and beyond them is more than memory.”

*

Arwen turned her head when she heard her husband enter the room. His step was slow and measured, no longer the gait of the man they’d called Strider. He had lived many years but even he had gotten old finally.

“Is Legolas well?”

“Aye, my dear. He is as hearty as he was a hundred years ago.”

She didn’t dare ask how he was. She knew it was coming and that it would be soon. She didn’t know if she could bear it. All those many years ago, when her father told her how it would end, how she would die of despair after he left her, she’d thought him simply trying to scare her into making another choice.

But now, faced with his imminent death, she knew that he had been right. She had given up forever to spend her life with him and she didn’t regret it. But without him, she had no reason to stay.

“Arwen, it is time to call the children home. I must name my heir. I fear that old age has finally become a burden.”

She rushed to him. “I will care for you! I will do everything for you! Do not go! Do not leave me!”

He smiled sadly as he made his way to the chair by the window where she’d been standing when he came into the room. He sat slowly.

“We knew this day would come. I wish that I could stay but I become older with each day and it gets harder and harder to do the things I used to take for granted. I haven’t ridden a horse in more than thirty years. I have to have help just to sit outside. I am tired, my love.”

She said nothing for a bit then she stood up straight and went to him, kneeling at his feet. “I will call them and we shall prepare. I know not what awaits us but I will do as you wish, my husband.”

Aragorn lifted her chin and wiped away a tear that ran down her cheek. “Nor do I but if we have done anything right in this world, perhaps there is at least peace for us in the next.”

She choked back a sob. “Will you wait for me?”

“Always, my queen, Always.”

CELEBORN IS MISSING

No one in Lorien had seen Lord Celeborn in more than a week and Galadriel was finally beginning to get worried,

Until Gandalf showed up.

Suddenly she thought she knew what her husband’s disappearance was all about.

“Are you looking for my husband?”

“Yes, I am. Haldir says he is missing.”

“Could it be that you have come on one of your secret missions?”

Gandalf laughed. “It could be.”

“Then he’s hiding from you. He had nightmares about giant rabbits for months the last time you dragged him off in the spring.”

Gandalf scratched his chin.

“I’ll tell him that you’re looking for him.”

Gandalf went to the hidden glade where the metal tube appeared now and again when his help was needed. Then he saw the tent and inside was a huge rabbit. He was dressed in Celeborn’s clothes and had his flask lying beside him.

Gandalf laughed so loudly that the rabbit woke.

“I came to ask for his help and he simply took the suit I brought for him and told me to take the week off. My wife has had five litters this year so I was perfectly happy to let your friend take my place so I could get a few good nights’ sleep.”

They heard a mighty roar and the tube landed in a few minutes and Celeborn debarked, still in his suit. He nodded at Gandalf, said hello to the rabbit and grabbed his flask. He shook it to make sure it wasn’t empty then opened and downed it upright.

“Same time next year?” He asked the rabbit.

“I’ll let you know the exact date.”

The rabbit boarded the tube and was gone. Celeborn turned to Gandalf. “Does she know?”

Gandalf nodded.

Celeborn turned his empty flask upside down and sighed. “Got any of that pipeweed oin you?”

Gandalf nodded again and they sat there for some time and blew smoke rings shaped like bunny rabbits.
