Helms Deep.

It rained and rained that night.

It rained as if the sky itself were weeping for our pain.

So many were lost in the battle.

I walked among the dead after Gandalf and the Rohirrim came at sunrise. My feet sank in the mud as we walked from one body to the other on the bloody earth.

There were men and elves alike. And boys. Boys too young to have beards yet. My heart ached every time I saw one, saw a mother’s pain and sorrow. I knew there were those who’d say it was worth it but not those women. They’d never say that it was worth it to see their children die in battle on a rainy night in hell.

So many had died yet the sun rose and those of us who were left went on. We buried them, the men and elves. We built fires and burned the Orcs. The air smelled like burning flesh mixed with the wood used as kindling.

The wizard watched, his eyes seeing it all, taking in our pain and sacrifice. Once when I was lifting an elf and loading him on the cart, the wizard came up beside me and helped me.

“I knew him,” he said. “He has brothers and a mother.”

I nodded. “As do we all.”
