Gandalf was waiting at the ship, waiting for the rest of the Ringbearers to arrive. They had done what they set out to do, this band of a very few.

Círdan came down the path from his home to the dock. A smile made his bearded face look young, much as it had before the Noldor had come to these shores with their wars and their oaths.

“I see you are ready, my dear friend!” Círdan clasped Gandalf’s hands in his own.

“I am the first one here?”

“Indeed you are but I have news that the Lady Galadriel and Elrond will arrive soon. Did you send for Frodo and Bilbo?”

Gandalf smiled. “I did but Frodo doesn’t know that he will be coming too. I rather think Bilbo will be excited to go on a new adventure though. He always was one for adventure, even when he didn’t know it yet.”

“You have done well by this land and its people, my friend.”

Gandalf laughed, a sound that Círdan had always loved to hear. “No small amount of that credit goes to you, Círdan.” He held up the hand that still wore the red ring that Círdan had given him so many years ago. “This ring has been as helpful to me as the other two were to their bearers. I care not that the people of Middle Earth remember me but I hope at least some of them will remember what happens when they allow others to have too great a power over their own fates.”

“Many will forget but there will always be the few who remember and serve to remind the rest.”

“Are you sad to see our days ending here, Círdan?”

“I am. This is my home, the land of my own heart. But I will gladly walk those western shores with you, my friend.”

Lord Celeborn arrived with his wife and walked her to the dock. He held her hand as stepped onto the wide gangplank, then handed it to Círdan. “I will see you again someday, my love,” he whispered as she hastened across. They had obviously already said their longer goodbyes.

Elrond followed, bowing to his sons as they mounted their horses and rode away, choosing not to stay and watch the ship set sail.

Bilbo and Frodo came last, Frodo surprised and pleased that he was to be included.

Before they got ready to sail, Gandalf stood at the plank once more. He called out to his faithful friend upon the shore. Shadowfax shook his head and whinnied, then slowly boarded the ship as well.

Gandalf greeted him with a smile and ran his hand down the horse’s graceful neck. “I’ll not leave you behind, my friend. You have given as much to free Middle Earth as any of us have and you have borne this Ringbearer with utmost faithfulness.”

The plank was pulled onto the ship and the sails were readied then Gandalf and his faithful companion, Shadowfax, sailed in the west to live at long last in the peace they deserved.
