JUST LIKE MAMA AND NANA
Arwen was sitting in her father’s chair in his study. She was rubbing her eyes and pretending she’d not been crying. Her hair had come loose from it’s braid and she looked a little bedraggled.
“What is the matter?” Erestor asked her as he sat in the other chair.
“Brothers are dumb!”
Erestor tried not to smile. “Yours appear to be. What have they done now?”
“They said I couldn’t be a soldier cuz I’m just a girl.”
“They did? Did you want to be a soldier?”
“I wanted to play soldier with them. They said girls are s’posed to learn to sew and cook.”
“Did you ask when they’d ever seen your mother or your nana sewing and cooking?”
She looked up and smiled. “Restor, you’re right. Nana is like a queen and everyone in Lorien does as she says, even Papa Celeborn. And Mama, well, Mama helps Father in the apothecary and she helps him when he treats sick people. She makes sure that everyone in all of Imladris does their work, mostly Dan and Ro, who she says are ‘lazy, lazy boys’ and Father, who would forget his head if it wasn’t ‘tached to him.”
“See there? You can be anything you want to be.”
Arwen smiled, her tiny face already showing what a beauty she would someday be. “I want to grow up to be like Mama and Nana, a queen who knows more than her silly husband.”
Erestor lifted her down from her father’s chair and handed her one of the pretty red apples that Elrond kept in a bowl on the desk. “I’m sure you’ll do just that, little one. Run along and tell your brothers that I said you can be anything you want and they’d better behave and let you play too.”
Erestor watched her and wondered what the future really had in store for her.
Whatever it was, she was sure to be up to the task; that much he knew.
