SECRETS
Melian watched Galadriel mix the potion that she’d just taught her. The elf woman was good with magic. She had a strength within her that Melian had seldom seen in an elf, or in a Maia either, for that matter.
But she also had that secret, the one that Melian had already guessed.
“Galadriel, you cannot keep the truth from my husband forever. He will find out about the Kinslaying and the Doom of the Noldor eventually.”
Galadriel turned to her, a look of near panic on her face. “You will not tell him? Not yet?”
“No, child, I will not but he will find out and he will be angry beyond what I have seen before.”
Galadriel sighed and straightened her shoulders, as if gathering her strength and will. “When the time comes, I will deal with it. I cannot change what is done, my dear friend. I would that my cousins had not been so harsh and so unforgiving. I would that we had stayed at home instead of following but I desired more than I had there and Feanor’s idea to leave seemed sound enough until he left us to die on the Helcaraxë. It was only then that we knew how truly obsessed he had become.”
“My husband is stubborn and hard headed and will do what he will do. When he finds out, I will do what I can to make it less harsh for you and your brothers. I am fond of you and I am not blind to the feelings Celeborn seems to have for you and his friendship with Finrod.”
Galadriel said nothing for several minutes then she looked at Melian with so much sadness in her eyes. “I shall miss you, my friend, for I know that after the secret is told, I shall have to move on eventually to my own home and these last few months here with you have been almost like being at home with my mother.”
“We shall speak of it no more. Cook says your Celeborn has brought us fresh venison for our dinner. Shall we go see what herbs and spices we can take to the kitchens from my gardens?”
Galadriel smiled and they went out to Melian’s garden as if nothing had ever troubled either of them.
