THE YULE ELF

The old elf sat by the fire. Nights in the Havens got cold. His home was not enchanted in the same way Lothlorien was, but it was enchanted, nevertheless. He drank his tea slowly and looked out over the sparkling sea.

It was about time. He rose from his chair and went out to the barn. He harnessed four fine Meara and hooked them to his mithril sled. He drove it out onto the snow. Very few people of any kind had seen the Yule elf’s sled. It was already loaded with bags and packages of all sorts.

He hopped up into the sled and touched the reins to the horses’ necks. With a mighty leap, they were airborne. They lingered for a moment over Cirdan’s home and then they were gone.

DOL GULDUR

Legolas hated that dark stronghold with all his being. He knew that the Necromancer and his dark minions were responsible for the spiders and the growing cancer around his once green and beautiful homeland.

He sometimes rode out from his father’s home and watched as fires burned deep in the towers at Dol Guldur.

Who was there? What evil did they conjure in the dead of night? What force could make spiders who talked? Black squirrels?

His father would not speak of the residents of Dol Guldur, saying only that evil would one day be vanquished.

Legolas surely hoped so.

BILBO IN THE DUNGEON

Bilbo wandered around in the cellars of King Thranduil’s Palace. He found storerooms and wine cellars, apples and potatoes along with barrels of wine and ale. But the cellars went deeper and they were darker, with the sound of rats scratching the floors as they scurried along and other things, bigger things moving about in the darkness.

He looked for a way out. He needed to save his companions. He might be a burglar but he wasn’t a very brave one.

At the end of one such tunnel, he saw a light and the river beyond.

He could save them!

THE MONSTER BENEATH

Frodo saw what no one else did.

When Boromir followed him, he saw a monster beneath the man’s face, saw the lust for the Ring in all its ugliness. He knew in that moment what Bilbo had felt when he saw the Ring in Frodo’s possession. He knew what it did to all who touched it.

He saw the beast as Boromir talked to him, asking him questions as a distraction while his eyes stayed on the Ring. He saw the evil.

He put his hand on the chain and let it slide down to touch the Ring. The Precious.

Fire Burns

Bilbo could swear he heard the thing speak! He hung onto his tree and looked down into its glowing red eyes. It said something else. The language was not one he knew but the awful growl he recognized.

“Shoo! Go away!” he yelled ineffectively at the huge warg standing beneath the tree he had taken refuge in. Its fur glowed red in the light of the fires they had set but it kept coming, ignoring the heat of the fires coming hearer to them both.

It would take a miracle to save him! Then he heard the flapping of wings…

MOTHER AND SON

She was not willing, not after the enchantment wore off, but by then she was mine. The Noldor bitch screamed and defied me at every turn but she bore the child willingly. Why, I do not know. He was fair and beautiful like her. I hated him as much as I did her. She tried to poison him toward me, but he hated her people as much as I did.

I should have let them go. They caused me nothing but grief. But I could not live without her near. I loved her too, more than I hated the Noldor.

Why do they bother me? I care not for their loud voices or their claims of ownership of this mountain. I am here with my treasure. It is simple. It is mine and I shall destroy them all again if they try to take one bit of it from me – one single bit!

The one with the hairy feet entertains me. He is not like the others. He cares not for my treasure. He has a treasure of his own – I can sense it though I cannot see it. It calls to him much as my treasure calls to me.

Summary: The One Ring casts the worst spell of all.

~~~
THE WORST SPELL
Not all the spells in Middle Earth were bad, Gandalf thought, but the spell the One Ring cast on any who touched it was the worst sort of magic, if indeed it was magic at all.
The Ring held great power, a power so great that no being, mortal or immortal could withstand it. It seemed to him that the more powerful the being who held it was to begin with, the easier they were to corrupt and bring to ruin.
The Hobbits were perfect to carry the Ring. He knew that it would eventually corrupt Frodo as it had Gollum, but maybe not before it could be unmade. That was the key to the entire quest. Frodo had to be able to hold out until they could get it to Mordor. He wasn’t sure that the little fellow could do it alone, but none had ever had a more stalwart companion that Samwise Gamgee. Sam was as dependable as the sun and as strong as well.
He knew that the Ring would destroy Frodo. He only hoped that going to the Undying Lands was reward enough for his life. It was, in the end,
MORGOTH’S FAITHFUL SERVANT
Húrin’s shame was complete. Lorgan laughed as he walked away. There was nothing worse than his own people believing he had been in league with Morgoth. His master was clever. Too clever for one such as Húrin.
Of course, this victory reminded him of the boy, the one who got away. His master had not been happy with that but they never found him. He was stubborn, Tuor was, but Lorgan was certain he never amounted to much. He would like to know how he managed to disappear so easily though.
No matter! They were all useless no accounts anyway!
THE DEATH OF SARUMAN
Grima stared at the wizard who had commanded him, who had promised him much, who had beaten and tortured him. He calmly slit the old maia’s throat and watched his mortal life drain away from him. It was the least that Saruman deserved. The very least. He hoped there was more punishment in store for him somewhere.
‘Death was a relief,’ Grima thought with his last conscious thought as the arrows pierced his heart and felled him quickly. He looked up and saw the sky, blue and clear before his vision dimmed and all went black. He ceased to be.
Darkness Again
She hated the light! At the same time, she craved it like a drug. She needed it to live, and cringed at the awful sight of it. If only she’d been able to take those stones from Morgoth! What did that fool need with them? What good was power when she hungered for them?
She scrabbled into her dark den to think, to plan. Someday the dark one would be gone and then all would be there for her to devour – all the horrid light would finally be consumed and she would be finally sated. All would be darkness again.
MORGOTH’S PUNISHMENT
Through all time, his anger never dimmed. Though he was held formless and sightless in the void, he still raged. Against his creator, against his brothers and sisters, against all creation. One day, Arda would pass and he would be free at last. He would have his revenge! They would all pay for what they had done to him.
Then a thought struck him.
An awful thought. He had been bound here until the end of time itself… All would pass into infinity, would cease to be.
He would be stuck alone with his anger, and never get his revenge.
SHELOB
She waits in the darkness.
Century upon century have passed since she fed, since she wrapped her food in a tight web and played with it until she was ready to eat the tender morsel. For many years, she fed on what was left of her children, since Sauron no longer sent treat her way. Elves and men did not pass either. All of her children are gone, her last meals in a lifetime of gorging.
She remembers, after a fashion, the smell of food, alive and afraid, just before she devours it.
She waits in the darkness all alone.
Summary: An very old Orc remembers his origins.
SHAMED
The Orc was old, as old as the Noldor were. He had been born in the Waters of Cuiviénen. Melkor had taken him away from his kin and tortured the tall, proud elf for years, locking him in a dungeon when he was done so no light could warm his face. His body had changed to something ugly and deformed, making him angry but subservient to the monster who made him.
He was too old for war now, so he commanded the others, the sniveling creatures bred from broken elves, malevolent inside and out. He bade them breed and beat them if they disobeyed, hating them all and most of all, hating his master.
He laughed when his whip curled around the leg of one of the laziest of the newest batch. He jerked hard, making the orc fall, and watched as his brothers tore him apart. They could not abide weakness in others though they were all weak and pitiful.
He taught them to kill elves, for killing his kin was his only joy.
He hated all elves because he remembered what he had been, He wanted to kill them before they could see his shame, his awful shame.
When I donned her skin, I felt…
I could feel her thoughts, her anguish as the hound ripped her throat out. I was not just pretending to be her, I was Thuringwethil! For one awful moment, I wanted to go to Sauron! Wanted to touch him, to see him!
But I pushed the thought away. I thought of Beren, of our quest. I had to get into Angband! I pulled her wings around me and asked to be let in. They were fooled.
I have it still, her skin. I feel it call and I wonder if I could fly…
THE MARSHES
Legolas and Gimli sat by the fire. The elf looked into the fire and spoke as if he were seeing it all happen in front of him.
“They were everywhere – the dead. They lay in the water as if asleep, hands crossed on their chests, weapons laid atop them. But you could smell their decay. The whole marsh smelled of death, sickly sweet and horrible.”
Gimli said nothing, just poured another cup of brandy and handed it to the elf.
“Men, elves, dwarves… all in equal measure. All dead.”
“’Tis over, lad.”
“When I close my eyes, it’s never over.”
