IN SORROW WE MUST GO

*

“In sorrow we must go, but not in despair. Behold! we are not bound for ever to the circles of the world, and beyond them is more than memory.”
~~ J.R.R. Tolkien

Arwen turned her head when she heard her husband enter the room. His step was slow and measured, no longer the gait of the man they’d called Strider. He had lived many years but even he had gotten old finally.

“Is Legolas well?”

“Aye, my dear. He is as hearty as he was a hundred years ago.”

She didn’t dare ask how he was. She knew it was coming and that it would be soon. She didn’t know if she could bear it. All those many years ago, when her father told her how it would end, how she would die of despair after he left her, she’d thought him simply trying to scare her into making another choice.

But now, faced with his imminent death, she knew that he had been right. She had given up forever to spend her life with him and she didn’t regret it. But without him, she had no reason to stay.

“Arwen, it is time to call the children home. I must name my heir. I fear that old age has finally become a burden.”

She rushed to him. “I will care for you! I will do everything for you! Do not go! Do not leave me!”

He smiled sadly as he made his way to the chair by the window where she’d been standing when he came into the room. He sat slowly.

“We knew this day would come. I wish that I could stay but I become older with each day and it gets harder and harder to do the things I used to take for granted. I haven’t ridden a horse in more than thirty years. I have to have help just to sit outside. I am tired, my love.”

She said nothing for a bit then she stood up straight and went to him, kneeling at his feet. “I will call them and we shall prepare. I know not what awaits us but I will do as you wish, my husband.”

Aragorn lifted her chin and wiped away a tear that ran down her cheek. “Nor do I but if we have done anything right in this world, perhaps there is at least peace for us in the next.”

She choked back a sob. “Will you wait for me?”

“Always, my queen, Always.”
