THE BABYSITTERS CLUB

Arwen was a holy terror. She had been since she’d gotten old enough to walk. Both Elladan and Elrohir feared her more than any foul creature in Sauron’s armies. All it took was her toddler’s voice crying out ‘Edan and Ohir’ and they ran away as fast as they could but tonight that wasn’t going to work.

“Mama, we don’t want to watch her. She’ll get hurt or get lost or - ” Elladan was trying to be politic and not tell their mother that his tiny sister filled him with a dread like nothing else.

“Elladan, I know you and your brother will make fine sitters for Arwen. She’s so little, what can she get into?”

Elrond looked over his wife’s shoulder. “Glorfindel and Erestor will be here if you do need them.” His smile was not reassuring in the least.

“We’ll be back in three days. I think the four of you can handle one tiny girl for that long, don’t you?”

Finally they gave in, knowing that they weren’t going to win this one.

As soon as their parents left, Elladan and Elrohir gathered Arwen, her toys and some diapers and headed for Erestor’s quarters.

“I am not going to tend Arwen for you. Your father and mother left the two of you in charge of her and unless one of the three of you is dead or at least bleeding a lot, then I suggest you go back to the nursery and play with this pretty little thing! The cook will have dinner soon. I think he is making something special for dessert.” With that, he closed the door on the three children.

The brothers had no choice but to go back to the nursery and take Arwen with them. No sooner had they gotten in the door than she began to cry.

“Want Ma!” She said as she poked Elladan in the eye.

“Mama is gone for awhile. Elrohir and I are going to take care of you!” She hit him with her tiny fist and then began to chant ‘Ma gone!” in between heartrending sobs.

Elrohir grabbed his favorite toy, a carved horse that his grandfather had made for him when they visited back in the winter. He handed it to her. “See the pretty horsie!”

“Bah!” She smacked it away and only his fast hands kept it from breaking as it hit the hard wooden floor.

Elladan found a toy kitten in her diaper bag. It was soft and fuzzy. She batted it away with a squeal that made their ears hurt. “No katzen!”

“Maybe she needs a diaper.” Elladan had no idea if she did or not but he’d do anything to get his little sister to stop her awful crying.

It took both of them and half an hour to change her diaper, which needed changing in the worst way. She finally stopped crying but not before they let her play with Erestor’s chess set, which they’d ‘borrowed’ a few days ago to practice for Grandmother’s upcoming visit. She and Grandfather played chess with them as if they were already grown, which no one else would do with them.

She threw the chess pieces all over the room and laughed happily as her brothers scrambled to find them all. Then she threw then all again. And yet again.

Erestor knocked on the door. “Dinner time, children.”

They boys hurriedly cleaned Arwen and themselves and headed down to the dining room. Erestor and Glorfindel were already seated. The boys put Arwen in her chair and sat on either side of her.

“Apa Juice!” Arwen shouted and banged her cup on the table. Milk splattered all the way to the ceiling. “APA JUICE!”

Elladan grabbed her cup and whispered, “Stop it!”

Arwen replied with a squeal that made the crystal chandelier tremble in fear and then she began sobbing again and mumbling, “Apa juice!” over and over as if the lack of it had broken her very heart.

Glorfindel put his hand over his mouth to keep the twins from seeing him laugh. Erestor elbowed him just to be on the safe side. “SHHH!” he hissed as if the children wouldn’t notice.

Elrohir made use of the lull to get her some apple juice from the kitchen. She stopped crying, drank it down in what seemed like one long swallow, thrust her cup back at him and shouted, “More!” in a voice that could have been heard all the way to Lothlorien. He got her some more and she drank that.

“Ride pony!”

“It’s dark outside. You can ride tomorrow.”

“Ride now!”

The twins looked at Erestor, who shook his head no.

“You can ride tomorrow. Let’s go to our rooms and Elrohir and I will give you rides until bedtime.”

Her eyes gleamed much like Sauron’s must have when he made friends with the smiths of Eregion. Two hours later, the twin sons of Elrond were as worn out as any slave of Darkness had ever been and Arwen was still yelling “PONY!” in that shrill voice of hers.

The boys knew they were out of their depth but they didn’t know what to do. Every time they tried to stop, Arwen started screaming and crying. So they kept going.

Erestor knocked on the door. “Children, Glorfindel and I have come to help get you all ready for bed. The bath water is ready for you two in your parents’ bath. Please bathe quickly and put on the pajamas I laid out for you. I will bathe the princess here and get her ready to go to bed too.”

The twins ran into each other in their haste to run from the room but they finally managed to get through the door. The stripped out of their playclothes and got in the tub. Each boy scrubbed himself and washed his hair without any splashing or horseplay at all. This was an extreme departure from their normal routine.

When they arrived back in the nursery, Arwen was all clean and dressed in her pajamas with ponies on them. Erestor had brought in a second rocking chair and Glorfindel occupied it. He handed Arwen to Glorfindel, who gave her her special cup and her stuffed pony as Erestor put the boys in their beds. He sat down, opened a book and began to read about the elves of old, from the days when Grandmother lived in Aman.

Pretty soon, all three children were asleep. Erestor smiled at Glorfindel. “I don’t think we’ll have any trouble out of any of them for the next few days. Do you?”

Glorfindel smiled as he pulled the cover up over Arwen and kissed her forehead. “They are all rather sweet, aren’t they?”

They left the sleeping children with the door ajar so they would hear if anything were amiss in the night. Elrond had wonderful children and Erestor hoped he was around a long time to see what fine adults they would someday be.
