SOMEDAY

“General O’Neill, sir, there’s a phone call for you,” his secretary announced on the intercom.

“I’m not in.”

“I think you’ll want to take this one, sir.”

“Oh all right.” He reluctantly lifted the phone.

“Sir? It’s me.”

“Carter? I was worried.”

“We made it back. It was touch and go. We lost the base and two 302s.”

“Damn! Who attacked?”

“No idea, sir but my best guess would be the Lucian Alliance.”

“We never seem to run out of bad guys, do we, Carter?”

“Not since the day we met, sir. Maybe someday though.”

“Someday sounds good to me.”

THAT’S A FACT, KOWALSKI

“Are you watching unicorn shows on television again, Private?” Kowalski said. “You know what Skipper said.”

Private managed to look guilty when he asked. “It makes me look weak and soft?”

“That’s right. Penguins are tough and hard. It’s a fact.”

Private poked himself in the tummy and noted that he was more fluffy and squishy than tough and hard. But to Kowalski, he nodded. “Tough and hard, yes.”

“So let’s watch something else.” They flipped the channel to a human saying, ‘That’s a fact, Jack.’ Kowalski shivered and changed the channel back. “Even I’m not tough enough for that!”

DEWDROP

“I think about you every day, you know.”

No answer.

“I miss you as much as I did then.”

Still nothing.

The early summer morning was bright and a little cool. It wasn’t yet late enough for the heat of the day before to last through the night. The world was a bright green today, the color it was before the summer heat dulled the grass.

“It was a day like that you left, you know.”

Nothing.

“I love you and I’ll love you forever. Do you know that?”

I saw it, the sun shining off a tiny drop of water on a leaf in one of the oaks. It looked like the sparkle of a diamond in the light. I smiled and wiped the tear that fell down my cheek.

“I’ll be there someday, when it’s time. You’ll wait for me, won’t you?” I whispered to the morning light.
