PROOF



“Let’s stop!” Ian Malcolm said to Alan from the passenger seat.

“Are you nuts? We have to get to a meeting. Besides, we’ve seen the real thing.” Something about Ian always made Alan grumpy.

“Look at them! They’re like gods all in white!”

Alan found himself stopping, looking at the giant dinosaurs. He had to admit they had a certain appeal, so big and bright. They got out and Ian handed his phone to a young woman who was looking at the Apatosaurus.

“Take our picture!”

She did and he smiled at Grant. “Now we can prove we’ve seen dinosaurs.”

Part Thirty-one
Live Free

Owen and Claire found several nests though they dared not approach them. Some of the nests were those of predators, small ones that had escaped when the Indominus rex was on her rampage and had not been captured afterward.

“What do we do now?” Claire asked.

“We can tranquilize the parents and move them all inside but we need to decide if we are going to keep them inside or let them run free.” Owen thought they should be free but he wasn’t the one who made the decisions here. Claire was.

“I think they should have free run, the smaller ones anyway. We’ll have to make sure they don’t eat all our herbivores but I think we need to let them all have the most natural ecosystem we can provide.”

Owen smiled. He liked the way she talked. She was very different from the corporate drone she’d been before.

“The visitors will have very limited access to the animals, much like those zoos that are really mini habitats. The visitors there watch from afar while the animals live as much as possible as they did when free.”

“I like the way you think,” he told her as he slipped an arm around her.

“I know,” she whispered as she kissed his cheek. “Maybe we could, um, talk about it some more over dinner?”

“Are you asking me for a date?” Owen could be a little coy at times.

“I think I am, Mr. Grady. That okay with you?”

“Yesssss.”

Speculation

Was InGen growing more dinosaurs than they let on? Were they growing the things he’d seen in Wu’s lab? What horrors had they created with DNA from all the different species of creature he’d seen in that lab?

There were more ethical questions than he could answer, Owen thought. The big question seemed to be was he enabling this by being here, by training the animals?

Since Hoskins and the disaster, he’d been thinking a lot, more than he ever had before.

Perhaps he could at least see what was going on before it got too crazy.

He hoped so.

Part Twenty-seven
Tiny Terror

For over 22 years, there were sporadic reports all over the Caribbean about odd lizards who were aggressive and attacked people. Many wrote them off to silly tourists or native superstition but there were a few people who knew just what they were.

Alan Grant knew. He’d found the nests on Isla Nublar both times he’d been there. They had to have spread by now and he knew it. He never said anything to anyone though.

So did Owen Grady. He knew his dinosaurs, all of them, and he knew that the ones who had begun to reproduce would have migrated to several islands by now, maybe even further. He read local news and listened to the men who lived locally talk. There was a little chatter from time to time about green striped lizards.

He wondered if he might catch one of them.

He decided to call Dr. Grant.

Ready to Go


Opening day was just a week away! The park was looking good. All the damage was cleaned up and the dead animals had been disposed of. Staff had been hired and trained. The dinos were a little sparser than before but they were all growing and doing nicely.

Jurassic World was more zoo and less sideshow now. The emphasis was on the past and what part dinosaurs had played rather than their future. There was no mention of newer and bigger killing machines at this new Jurassic World.

They were ready, ready for anything.

Claire was keeping her fingers crossed.

Owen patted Blue’s cheek while she was in her feeding harness. He clicked his little clicker to let her know he was happy with her. She seemed to understand this.

“You know, we have some new baby raptors. They’re small but already hunting game.”

She made a sound. Again she approved.

He continued. “Maybe someday you’ll have a place to roam free on the island. Like they do now.”

She made her own clicking sound, a gentle one as to assure him that everything would be all right.

He patted her head. “You’re my best girl, Blue. My best girl!”

Tim Murphy had read the sparse news from Isla Nublar with both curiosity and horror. Hadn’t anyone learned from twenty-two years ago? He seldom thought of their adventure at Jurassic Park these days. He was married and had one daughter and another child on the way, so there was little time for purposeless thought.

He lost interest in science and dinosaurs after Jurassic Park. He’d gone to law school instead, preferring academics to anything in the out of doors. He hadn’t even been camping since he was nine. He’d never even mentioned it to his wife.

So why was he thinking of it now?

He called Lex and asked her if she’d read the news. She said she’d heard something about it but had tuned it out. She pointed out that he should do the same.

He agreed.

Then he called the airline and booked a flight to San Juan.

A Real Adventure

Gray Mitchell still had dinosaurs all over his room. His mom tried to take them away, saying she was sure he’d feel better without them.

“Mom, I still like dinosaurs. It’s not their fault that people are stupid.”

She left him alone but it was clear that she thought he was still traumatized.

He picked up a toy replica of a velociraptor tClaire had sent to him before the trip and smiled. He’d had an adventure! And found out he had a cool big brother as well.

He couldn’t wait until the park reopened. He hoped Claire invited them back.

Part Seventeen – Unofficially


Somewhere in the DoD headquarters in the Pentagon

“You’re sure this came from Hoskins?”

“Yes, sir. It came in from him before the incident on Isla Nublar.”

“These ‘raptors’ – what are they?” The man who asked the question was not far down the ladder from the Secretary of Defense himself.

The man who answered was not a DoD man nor was he InGen. He was strictly off the books. “They are prehistoric dinosaurs that will kill ANY human or animal that crosses their path.”

“He says they’re trainable.”

“He probably would disagree since one killed him.”

“Can we get them?”

The unofficial man sighed. “You’ll have to talk to Henry Wu.”

“I hear that no one knows where Dr. Wu is.”

“I can find him.”

“Find him. Tell him we want raptors.”

Idiot, the man said to himself but to the Dod official, he said. “I’ll do my best, sir.”

Part Fifteen
Fluffy the Dinosaur

Owen was at the docks when the first shipment of young dinosaurs came in from the cloning facility. They were herbivores of several differing species and most were still fairly young. It was good that they matured quicker than they had in nature or it would be several generations of humans before these beasts reached maturity. It only took a few years here.

Some of the young brachiosaurs were already as big as a truck, but they were docile enough to herd easily to the open plain they would live on. One of the gentle giants took a fancy to Owen, following him and nudging him when he walked among them.

He named her Fluffy, in honor of the family dog when he was a small boy. Fluffy became the primary leader of her herd and Owen visited her often, bringing her treats of limbs and leaves from some of the lush tropical trees and shrubs that decorated the island.

“Fluffy, you and I, we are starting a whole new age here on the island.” He patted her and noticed something no one else seemed to have seen. Fluffy was not a female. Fluffy was their very first male dinosaur at Jurassic World.

Owen was very glad his raptors were all girls.

So far, anyway.
