THE LAKE

Dean looked out at the small lake. The cabins were kinda small and the water was a bit brownish but it seemed like paradise to a boy who lived in motel rooms and watched his kid brother while their dad was always gone.

Little Sammy tugged on his arm. “Can we go swimming, Dean? Can we?.”

He meant to say no and tell Sammy to get back in the car, but those eyes were so hopeful, so eager.

“Sure, Sammy. Get your shorts on.”

We can do this before Dad gets back, he thought as Sammy waded into the lake.

THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED

“It’s just like the Frost poem. Which one should we take?” Dean asked Sam.

“The Frost poem? You know a poem?”

Dean recited,
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

I’m not a rube, you know.”

“Yes, you are. How do you know the poem?”

“I read it in a poetry book,” Dean said very quietly, almost whispering.

“What did you say?” Sam pressed.

“A poetry book! A book of poems! A damned poetry book! There! Are you satisfied?”

Sam howled with laughter. “God, yes!”

ALL A DREAM

The bike was old, his bike. But there wasn’t any rust and the seat was still supple and soft as if new. He looked around and noticed other things. The buildings were newer than he remembered them being. There was grass growing in the field beside the building, not the garbage and weeds he’d seen there yesterday.

Then he saw the boy. He recognized the hair, the jeans…

What the hell?

Then the woman came outside. “Dean, don’t go too far. Your dad will be home soon.”

He awoke, felt hot tears on his cheek. He missed their mother still…

VOTE FOR…

“Sammy, are we voting this year?” Dean asked his brother as they sat at the table in the Men of Letters hideout. They were eating takeout burgers and drinking sugary Cokes.

“It’s an election year?”

“Yep. I don’t think they show The Apprentice that many times a day on tv, so they must be campaign ads.”

“You mean he is running for president?” Sammy asked.

Dean laughed. “Wonder if they know he works for Crowley?”

“No shit?” Sammy knew that Dean knew things about the King of Hell.

“Wait ‘til I tell you who the other one is working for!’

GHOSTS

His ghosts were loud tonight.

They weren’t really ghosts, but Dean was haunted by the past, by his bad choices and his good ones. He was haunted by their dad, by Sammy, by Bobby, all the other ones who were gone whether he was responsible or not.

He sat up on the side of the bed. Sammy was snoring gently in the other bed.

He drained a half empty beer from the table then poured a tall glass of bourbon, downed it too.

“Dean? You okay?”

“Sure, Sammy. Go back to sleep. I’m okay now.”

And he was.

For now.

THE WATERING HOLE

Every place has secrets and the old watering hole was no exception. The ghosts of the boys who’d died there that awful night never rested, calling out to swimmers still. Everyone thought it creepy but harmless.

They thought that until boys started disappearing, only to be found dead a few days later downstream. They all look as if they’d died of fright, sightless eyes wide and mouths open in a silent scream.

One of the townspeople has met some boys once who said they were hunters. He’d thought it a joke at the time.

“Dean Winchester? We need your help.”

BERRY PICKING TIME

“Sam, I don’t want to pick berries.” Dean had no idea why his brother brought him here. There were families with children and happy couples of all ages standing by the bushes, picking berries. “I like them from the store.”

He noticed three little boys and moved closer to listen to them.

“I want to go home,” the smallest one said.

“The berries are good,” the biggest one said.

“But they’re dirty!” The little one whined. “They’re supposed to come from store, where they’re clean.”

Dean said. “See, even a small kid knows that. Let’s get outta here.”

Sam sighed.

“Why don’t we try to talk to her first?” Sam asked.

“Sammy, they call us hunters for a reason. We’re not some pansy ass ghost whisperers.” Dean stomped into the house, shouting for the ghost to show herself.

They found nothing.

Nada.

“I told you this one was a prank,” Dean said.

The being watching from the window had glowing red eyes and it growled as they drove out of sight.

SMOKED TURKEY DAY

November 24, 2013

“Have we ever had a real Thanksgiving?” Sam asked Dean as they ate burgers from a diner they’d passed on the way back to the bunker.

“Sure, back when we were…” Dean stopped and thought. “Not really. We usually just had turkey sandwiches or something from the store. You know how Dad was about holidays.”

“Since we have a kitchen here and all this stuff, why don’t we have the real thing this year?”

“Sammy, do you know how to cook turkey?”

“How hard can it be? People make them every year.”

*

November 28, 2013

The Winchesters stood outside the Men of Letters bunker, rubbing their watery eyes and trying to breathe around coughs.

“Who knew that burning turkey could make so much smoke? We’ve torched lots of bones and they never smoked like that,” Dean managed to gasp out.

“We were burning them, Dean. We weren’t trying to cook them!”

“Obviously we don’t need to be trying that again. Ganking Demons is less dangerous and a lot less smoky. What d’ya say we find a nice Denny’s or something?”

Sam grinned. “Works for me!”

And off they went in search of the perfect Thanksgiving dinner.

“Dammit, Cas! You’re not an angel anymore. You can’t just appear like before.”

“Then how am I talking to you?”

Dean saw the tablet on the table when he moved closer and he saw Cas looking confused on the screen. Dean shook his head at Castiel.

“There you are! Where are you by the way?”

Cas looked around. “Clearly I’m not in heaven.”

“Clearly not.”

BEING HUMAN

Castiel lay in bed in the shelter and thought about Dean. He thought he understood him but now he saw just how much Dean cared. He’d never realized just exactly how frail human life was and how much Dean sacrificed for him. There were terrible things about being human, pain and hunger especially. Smells, oh dear God, the smells were awful but on the good side were things like good food and a hot shower.

Dean ignored them all (sometimes) to make sure he was safe, to make sure Sam was safe as well. He spent most of his life looking after someone else.

Cas thought he’d understood love but now he knew he hadn’t understood it at all. He wondered if he’d ever see Dean again. When he did, he wanted to make sure that Dean knew how much he loved him and appreciated all the things Dean had done for him. Maybe he’d throw his arms around Dean and kiss him right on the lips. He blushed at the thought. Would Dean like that? Probably not. He seemed to prefer the touch of females.

Maybe he’d just shake his hand and pat him on the back.

Maybe not.

That night he dreamed… of heaven, of angels, thousands of angels. He didn’t even want to know what that was about. He was pretty sure that Dean did but Dean wasn’t saying shit.

He’d find out soon enough and he’d regret it. That he was sure of.

“Why worry about my health all of a sudden?”

“I’m your brother. Can’t I worry?”

Dean looked closely at the veggies as if they might be something rotten and foul.

“Nope. It’s not like you to worry. What gives?”

“Cas read an article and he’s worried.”

Dean turned away so Sam couldn’t see the pleased smile on his face. “Okay, I’ll try them, just this once.”

CASTEIL READS FANFICTION

Castiel slammed the computer shut when Dean came back into the motel room. He looked very guilty. Dean wondered what he’d been up to.

“Cas? Been looking at porn?” Dean grinned knowingly. That’s what he did online but at least he looked at real girls. Sam liked anime porn!

Cas turned even redder but shook his head. “Dean, have you heard of this thing called fanfiction?”

Dean laughed. He’d caught Sammy looking at it a few times. “Yeah, I know about it. Have you ever read those books that Chuck wrote?”

“I’ve seen one or two. They actually are fairly accurate. But these fanfiction writers write things about me and you being… um, us being intimate in a way that men… angels don’t do.” His blush deepened even further.

Dean grinned a near evil grin. “What do you mean, Cas?” He loved torturing Cas this way.

“I read a story about you having a baby. My baby!”

“Well, those fangirls get way out there sometimes.”

“But how would you even get pregnant? You’re a man.”

“Really? You don’t know?” He leaned close and whispered into Castiel’s ear what men did to one another in those stories, what they did to one another in real life too.

“Is – why – really? People really actually do that? Oh!”

“I don’t but yeah, some people do.”

“Do men kiss?”

“For real?” Dean was getting warmed up to the subject. “Sure. Why not?”

Cas looked at him really hard for a minute then he closed his eyes.

“What is it?” Dean asked.

“I’m waiting.”

“For what?”

“For you to kiss me, Dean. You always say I need to learn to act like a person. If men kiss, then I want you to kiss me. ”

Dean didn’t do anything but stare at Cas, who finally opened one eye. “I’m still waiting,” Cas said and closed his open eye.

“What the hell? Why not?” Dean leaned close and kissed Cas on the lips.

Cas made a humming sound. “Why not indeed? Do it again.”

And he did. And again and again.

GUARDIAN ANGEL

Dean sat by Castiel’s bed and watched him. He stared into space most of the time but when he wasn’t doing that, he was screaming as if Satan himself were after him. Of course, that was exactly what was wrong with him.

He loved having his Sam back but this was a high price to pay. Cas was something he’d never had before. A friend.

In all the years and all the travels, everyone else had been something else.

Bobby was more of a father than his own dad had been. He remembered Bobby playing ball with him when his dad thought it was stupid to waste time with things that didn’t get the job done.

Sam was his kid brother. Sure, they were partners but Sam was still someone he had to look after, to care for like his dad had told him to.

Lisa… he loved her but they couldn’t be together now or probably ever. It just wasn’t going to happen. Not that she’d put up with him mooning around because he couldn’t gank monsters anyway.

All the other hunters, well, besides the fact that they were mostly all dead, were just folks who did the same work. Even the ones he loved.

But Cas… Cas was his. He taught Cas about booze and women and… cell phones, for God’s sake. When he prayed, Cas showed up to help him. Cas was his very own guardian angel. And his friend. And he missed him so much.

He wiped something wet from his face. What the fuck?

Must be some kinda allergy.

Well, it was time he was going. Sam was waiting. As was an army of Leviathans. He leaned over and kissed Cas on the forehead and for one tiny second, it seemed that familiar face relaxed and a smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.

“See ya round, pal.”

WHERE ANGELS DARE TO TREAD

Dean watched Castiel eat breakfast. He’d never seen anyone eat like that. Even he couldn’t match the angel. Cas had ordered eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, biscuits and gravy, toast with jelly, milk, juice, coffee and even a bowl of cereal.

“Damn, Cas, you keep that up and you’ll be a tub of lard in no time.”

“Tub of lard?” Cas looked confused.

“Fat, Cas, he means you’ll get fat,” Sam added helpfully, grinning at Dean.

The angel felt of his stomach and looked at Dean. “Not fat yet.”

When the waitress came back to the table, Cas pointed at his plate and asked for another of the same. She shook her head but went to put in his order with the cook.

Dean sipped his coffee and Sam ate a bowl of fresh fruit as Cas launched into his second plate of food.

“Bobby said he’d gotten reports of something new in Kansas. I told him we’d head back that way,” Dean told Sam. “It sounds like a simple ghost to me but we might as well check it out.”

Dean had only looked away from Cas for a moment to talk to Sam and when he looked back, all that was left were empty plates, bowls and a coffee cup.

And the check.

Dean grabbed it, looked at the total then said, “That little shit! He stiffed me for the check again!”

Sam couldn’t hide his grin as they paid left, heading out to chase away the darkness one more time.
