PARTNERS IN LIFE


Jack really hated cold planets. They reminded him of his trip to the frozen South Pole on Earth with Carter. He’d rather have sunshine and fishing temperatures any day. He wished he and Carter were somewhere fishing right now.

He smiled at his own thought and shook his head. Gotta be something wrong with a man who fantasizes about fishing with the woman he – loves?

Oh my! He’d never really thought about it like that before. Did he love her? Did he want her to be his - Wife? Girlfriend?

Girlfriend sounded so silly at his age. Woman friend sounded even worse. So what was she?

She was the light of his life! She was the reason he could drag his tired old ass out of bed each day and tramp through that Gate to some godforsaken jungle or freezing tundra half a galaxy away. And the reason he put up with all the rest – the Air Force and its rules, the mediocre pay, the secrecy.

He remembered how his chest had felt every time he’d almost lost her. It had ached like it had when Charlie had died. Living in a world without Charlie was hard, very hard, and Carter was one of the only things that made it bearable.

So yeah, he loved Carter, he supposed. Loved her more than anyone else he knew. Did he want her to be his girlfriend? Nope. He wanted her to be his partner – in life, in crime and especially in fishing.

“General O’Neill, sir, there’s a phone call for you,” his secretary announced on the intercom.

“I’m not in.”

“I think you’ll want to take this one, sir.”

“Oh all right.” He reluctantly lifted the phone.

“Sir? It’s me.”

“Carter? I was worried.”

“We made it back. It was touch and go. We lost the base and two 302s.”

“Damn! Who attacked?”

“No idea, sir but my best guess would be the Lucian Alliance.”

“We never seem to run out of bad guys, do we, Carter?”

“Not since the day we met, sir. Maybe someday though.”

“Someday sounds good to me.”

WEDDING DATE

“Cameron, I need a date.” Vala breezed into his quarters without knocking.

“Vala, you know I’m not going to date you.” He was pouring himself a coffee, first of the morning.

“I don’t mean that kind of date. I need someone to go with me to a wedding. You’re it”

“So I’m the cousin?” He raised an eyebrow.

“No. We’re not related.” She grabbed his coffee and took a sip, wrinkled her nose and added a packet of sugar, then tasted it again.

“Nerds ask their nerdy cousins to go with them to weddings when they don’t have dates.”

She grinned wickedly. “You can be my nerdy cousin then. You’ll need a nice suit. And your coffee is cold.” She handed him the cup, kissed his cheek and left without waiting for an answer.

He tasted the coffee and made a face. What was he going to do with her?

Author’s Note: I decided to do a ficlet every day this month. For a prompt, I took the FF100 table and closed my eyes and picked one: Yellow.
Spoilers: Nope.
Summary: Daniel’s tie is horrible.

MUSTARD YELLOW

Cameron Mitchell couldn’t help but burst out laughing as Daniel Jackson came into the room. Mitchell was dressed in his dress uniform but Daniel, being a civilian, was dressed in a suit and tie.

A yellow tie.

Mustard yellow.

“You didn’t have something a little more subdued?” Cam knew the wedding was supposed to be a serious thing but damn, that tie was awful!

“It was the only one I had that wasn’t outdated,” Daniel stubbornly insisted.

“But Daniel, it’s so ugly!”

Daniel said nothing, just straightened his tie and looked toward the back of the church. Carter came down the aisle, resplendent in a deep blue dress that made her look like a princess. She carried red roses in her hands as she took her place beside the dais.

Then the pianist struck up the traditional Mendelsson’s Wedding March and everyone in the church stood, looking expectantly toward the back of the church.

Cameron bit his lip to keep from laughing again as General Landry and Vala Mal Doran filled the double doors at the back of the church. Landry had on his dress uniform and looked as uncomfortable as Cameron felt. Vala’s wild mane of black hair had been tamed into a swirl on top of her head with a few loose curls here and there. She carried a bouquet of white roses. Her dress, though, was what caught Cameron’s eye. It was long and flowing and beautiful as wedding dresses tended to be with one huge exception. It was yellow, mustard yellow, Jackson’s tie yellow!

He would have laughed but it struck him how lucky she and Daniel were to be together like this, to be marrying one another after all they’d been through, even though Jackson still tried to claim that he really was just marrying her because she was afraid they’d make her leave Earth otherwise someday.

He looked over at Daniel and he knew better. Jackson’s eyes sparkled behind his glasses at the sight of Vala, his arch nemesis and evidently, his own true love.

Cameron sighed. Maybe he’d find a love like that.

My Level of Incompetence

I was never meant to be a desk jockey but that’s what I do now. My name is Jack O’Neill and the powers that be have moved me from the work I love and the people I care about and put me here.

‘Here’ is an office in the Pentagon in Washington, DC. I have a nice title too. Head of Homeworld Security. Sounds catchy, doesn’t it?

I long for the days of being shot at and blown up and threatened on a daily basis! Man! I had no idea how good I had it when I gated all over the galaxy all the time with my best friends in the whole world. We saved the world on a weekly basis! When I got back and hit the sack, I slept like a baby.

These days I talk on the phone a lot and I know lots and lots of secrets, secrets that would keep you up at night if you knew them too. Hell, they even keep me up at night.

I have always heard that people tend to rise to the level of their own incompetence and I actually thought it was a joke. Nope, no joke. Here I am making decisions that could affect the entire planet and my favorite TV show is The Simpsons. Think about that!

I have put in my time. More than my time. I think it’s my turn to go. There is a lake with no fish in it and a wonderful Air Force Colonel that I would happily spend the rest of my life with out there. I think they need me more than the world does.
