A FIGHTIN’ CHANCE

Mal handed the helm over to River, who’d piloted Serenity often and very well since Miranda. He headed to the galley and found the box of apples they’d picked up on a small agrarian planet they’d delivered new trees and seeds to a month ago. The settlers hadn’t had much in the way of cash but they filled up Serenity’s food lockers with fresh produce.

The crew was smaller now that it had been – just him, Kaylee, Jayne, River Simon and Zoe. Inara had disappeared, probably went back to one of those fancified sanctuaries for companions who’d gotten too old for whorin’. Wash and the preacher belonged to the heavens now. He hoped that Shepherd’s God had been as good as he thought he was.

The ‘Verse itself was changing. River Tam had seen to that, river and Mr. Universe – who’d sent the signal out for all the ‘Verse to hear and hear they did.

He’d come a long way from the Battle of Serenity. They’d lost everything at that battle but now. Maybe, just maybe they had a chance. Maybe now, everyone did.

All because of one crazy girl who could read minds and fight like an army. And a brother who refused to give up on her.

He bit into the ripe apple and smiled at his turn of fortune.
