GHOSTS

His ghosts were loud tonight.

They weren’t really ghosts, but Dean was haunted by the past, by his bad choices and his good ones. He was haunted by their dad, by Sammy, by Bobby, all the other ones who were gone whether he was responsible or not.

He sat up on the side of the bed. Sammy was snoring gently in the other bed.

He drained a half empty beer from the table then poured a tall glass of bourbon, downed it too.

“Dean? You okay?”

“Sure, Sammy. Go back to sleep. I’m okay now.”

And he was.

For now.

“Do you think it’s still there?” Kaylee asked Mal.

“What would that be, Kaylee?” Mal turned to look at her.

“Earth That Was.”

He thought a moment. “Probably is. Take away the folks and the animals and all you got is a rock. Pretty hard to destroy a rock that big.”

“Do you ever wish you could go there?” She asked.

“What’s got you so ponderous tonight?”

“Don’t know. Just thinkin’ about where we come from.”

“As opposed to where we’re going?”

Kaylee laughed. “I don’t have an answer for either of those. Do you?”

He shook his head. “Nope.”

DOCTORS IN LOVE

The new ship was ready in record time. Bones hoped they didn’t manage to destroy another one anytime soon. He kept telling himself that he should have stayed on Earth, found another girl to marry and opened a practice in one of those throwback towns where they lived like they had in the 20th century.

But he knew he’d never be happy there.

As much as he complained, he craved adventure. He loved seeing new life forms, new planets. He loved the frantic pace of the Enterprise and her crazy crew.

But more than anything, he loved James T. Kirk.

VACATION

Arwen stood in the kitchen and stated at the woodstove. What was she supposed to do with it? She could make remedies and even still do a little magic, but she had no idea how to make dinner on this, this stove!

Why did Ellessar insist on coming to this little hut in the woods two or three times a year? They had everything they needed at home. He had no real need to hunt and fish and swim in that cold, cold pond.

The children loved coming here though. They followed their father everywhere.

He could bake the bread!
