THE DEAD RIDE BEHIND

Yes, the Dead ride behind. They have been summoned," said Elladan.

They all felt them, the living beings come to their quiet home. In the many years their spirits had abided here, they had felt no heartbeat, no warmth. Only cold. Endless cold. They were the Dead Men of Dunharrow. No men had paid more dearly for their perfidy. Isildur had cursed them for their desertion and still they paid. Perhaps they’d pay for all time.

Eagerly they listened to the heir, eagerly they went, following him who was King uncrowned, Isildur’s heir. They made no sound that mortal ears could hear but they murmured to one another. Would he allow them to fulfill their oath at last? Would he honor it in the end? Would he?

They drove the enemy from the ships, they did as they were bid. The men of the south ran in terror and those who stayed, died. The men of Dunharrow finally came to Isildur’s aid, a thousand years tardy in their charge. Their army was more fearsome dead than it had ever been alive.

When it was done, they waited. Would he honor them finally? They longed for it yet never hoped they would leave their prison. The sword was broken. They were freed.

Mirkwood

The forest was green and growing until he came, the necromancer, he without face and name. His footsteps shot tendrils of darkness that spread through the threes, changing them, imbuing them with a darkness from the roots up. The soil and trees spread the darkness to all who dwelled within them, all who bowed to the necromancer.

He built a home and other fell creatures came. The spiders, who whispered doom to their victims. Squirrels and rabbits are black night. Trolls and Orcs began to gather as well.

This evil drowned out the sun. Darkness reigned supreme.

For a time.

GLAURUNG

I am the Worm of Morgoth!

All in my path shall bow before me.

Or die!

I am the first minion of Morgoth and the most horrible! Death and pain follow me. Anguish and confusion are my weapons. None can escape my wrath!

Flee! I shall destroy you all!

None who come after me are as horrible by half. I am he who the mold is made from. All others are but a pale imitation of my own true terror. There is no victory in my death. Those who would kill me suffer more than I shall.

I am death!

IN THE DARKNESS

We watch, always, in the dark. Watching. Waiting. Hungry.

We are always hungry. Sweet treats in the forest! We catch them in our webs and keep them, letting fear make them taste sweet, savory… animals, children, hobbits…

We always hunger. For more. For it all. We want. We hunger…

Our webs are beautiful. So intricate, so sublime. Come closer! Look at the beauty. See the pattern. Closer still.

Come closer. Pain makes the meat sweet… fear makes it sweeter still. Come closer.

Can you see me in the dark? I can see you, so sweet, so close.

We watch always.
