BENEATH THE TABLE, part 2

Another evening.

And another meeting.

The two elflings were hiding beneath the table. With a bag of mice. And a bag of snakes.

Elrond spoke of darkness approaching them. At least he did until a handful of terrified little mice began to scurry out from beneath one of the tables. It took half an hour to rid the room of vermin and to begin again.

Shortly after that, many little snakes began to slither hither and yon. Even small snakes are scary to some and both elves and men began to cry out in alarm and run from the room until only Elrond and two small hidden elflings remained.

Elrond spoke to the unseen children. “I thank you for rescuing me this time but I shall require your attendance at all of my meetings from now on if this ever happens again.”

From that evening forward, the sons of Elrond were content to study some of Master Erestor’s history after dinner. Sometimes they did their mathematics. They’d even play with Arwen if pressed into it. They drank imaginary tea and danced with her dolls now and then.

Anything, it seemed, was better than a meeting in the Hall of Fire.

BENEATH THE TABLE, part 1

Elladan and Elrohir hid beneath the table in the Hall of Fire, trying to be silent as well as invisible. They wanted to see what exactly went on when ‘important guests’ came to visit their father, who always sent them to their room directly after dinner was done.

Soon the room filled with both elves and men, who talked of things that sounded even more boring than Master Erestor’s histories.

“I’m glad Papa sends us to bed,” Elladan whispered to Elrohir. “It’s a wonder that they all don’t die of boredom.”

“We can fix that,” Elrohir whispered with a wink…

AT LAST

Oropher wandered the shores of Aman alone much of the time. He thought about his son, his only son. How had Thranduil fared since he died all those many years ago? He stopped the tall ships when they came into port but none seemed to know Thranduil’s fate.

Elrond and Galadriel arrived and a few years later, his grandson, Legolas, arrived with a dwarf, of all things! But his son was still conspicuously absent.

Then one day he saw a ship on the horizon, the first one in a long, long time. He made his way to the dock and waited. Celeborn disembarked with another elf, but the other elf was too far to the side and Oropher couldn’t see his face.

Then he heard him speak. “The first thing I shall do is find my father. I have missed him these many long years.”

Thranduil cried tears of joy.

FRIENDSHIP

Frodo opened the door. Merry and Pippin stood there, arms filled with a variety of vegetables, fruits and fresh bread.

“Sam’s bringing roast chicken and pork and a big crock of Rosie’s sweet pickled gherkins,” Merry announced as they stepped into the house, handing Frodo a loaf of bread.

“And I’m going back for some grape jelly and strawberry preserves,” Pip put in as he laid his burden on the table.

“What is all this?” Frodo asked them.

“Since we are all so happy to be back in the Shire, Rosie Cotton thought a meal to celebrate our thankfulness might be good idea,” Merry told him.

“And we all agreed,” Pippin said as Sam arrived with the meats and pickles.

“So here we are,” Sam said as he patted Frodo on the shoulder.

Frodo smiled, something rare for him since his return. “I am glad you are all my friends.”

NO REDEMPTION

He watched them cavorting in the sea, the sons of Elwing. They looked so young, so innocent, splashing around in the waves. He rubbed a scarred hand over his face. They had seen things no one should see, had borne pain too heavy for their small shoulders and it was his fault.

He wanted to call out to them, to beg their forgiveness, to tell them he loved them and had since the beginning. He wanted to go back home, to unswear that damnable oath he’d made so long ago.

But there was no redemption for him. None at all.

SECRETS

Melian watched Galadriel mix the potion that she’d just taught her. The elf woman was good with magic. She had a strength within her that Melian had seldom seen in an elf, or in a Maia either, for that matter.

But she also had that secret, the one that Melian had already guessed.

“Galadriel, you cannot keep the truth from my husband forever. He will find out about the Kinslaying and the Doom of the Noldor eventually.”

Galadriel turned to her, a look of near panic on her face. “You will not tell him? Not yet?”

“No, child, I will not but he will find out and he will be angry beyond what I have seen before.”

Galadriel sighed and straightened her shoulders, as if gathering her strength and will. “When the time comes, I will deal with it. I cannot change what is done, my dear friend. I would that my cousins had not been so harsh and so unforgiving. I would that we had stayed at home instead of following but I desired more than I had there and Feanor’s idea to leave seemed sound enough until he left us to die on the Helcaraxë. It was only then that we knew how truly obsessed he had become.”

“My husband is stubborn and hard headed and will do what he will do. When he finds out, I will do what I can to make it less harsh for you and your brothers. I am fond of you and I am not blind to the feelings Celeborn seems to have for you and his friendship with Finrod.”

Galadriel said nothing for several minutes then she looked at Melian with so much sadness in her eyes. “I shall miss you, my friend, for I know that after the secret is told, I shall have to move on eventually to my own home and these last few months here with you have been almost like being at home with my mother.”

“We shall speak of it no more. Cook says your Celeborn has brought us fresh venison for our dinner. Shall we go see what herbs and spices we can take to the kitchens from my gardens?”

Galadriel smiled and they went out to Melian’s garden as if nothing had ever troubled either of them.
